Ombient is but one facet of multi-instrumentalist Mike Hunter. Exploring his more ethereal side, Hunter creates improvised soundscapes on a Warr Touch Guitar - a metal stringed guitar-like instrument designed for two-handed playing and extended sound generation. Utilizing a tapping technique associated with this instrument, the process is a radical departure from standard guitar practice. Picking and plucking note cycles amidst quietly growling e-bow guitar lines, Hunter bathes his tones in a deep, vast reverb. With the addition of several layers of echo, pitch shifting, long and short delay lines and other forms of digital processing, Hunter's live loop music spans the Space, Ambient, Experimental and New Age genres.
Under the name Ombient, Mike Hunter has in the past performed live solo on WPRB's Nocturnal Transmissions, at PEMAF and as part of the Cosmic Coffehouse series. His solo live in-studio on-air radio concert on the 02.15.09 broadcast of STAR'S END also included sounds made with traditional electric guitar as well as software, digital and anaolgue synthesizers. Ombient returns to STAR'S END for a live in-studio on-air radio concert on the 03.21.10 broadcast. | |
