STAR'S END Update 22 May 2022
Hyperincandescent Stephen James Buckley The electronic instruments in the studio belonging to Polypores are just waiting for Stephen James Buckley to tell his story. Realizing music of the imagination, the laboratory conditions of this art have produced Hyperincandescent (43'54"). While thoroughly modern, the making of and listening to this marvelous music does still allow for an old-fashioned charm and wonderment. Its reverence for thinking, or because it is undertaken by a musician whose mind is so settled and fixed upon their work, Hyperincandescent will be heard as a unique form of expression - one where the mind has created something that it did not already know of. Pursued in multiple parts, each of this album's suites connect continuously across the span of an LP side. From drifting weightlessness to roiling tempest, this music feels like a journey through time, darkness and light. Discovering properties of sound, Buckley expresses well the play of atoms in the mind. Describing this work by its magnitude, volume, density, speed, energy, mass, duration and direction may help listeners recognize the intelligence at the other end of this musical message. But the truth of this release is found in its ability to magically transform our surroundings into an element to which we belong. In striking sonic swirls and upward scales the two tracks re-affirm the pleasures of Electronic Music - while further in chill currents descend downward past known forces. Notes combine as they collide. In such shades lush and tender their beauty feels electric. Sequencer patterns emerge amid machine modulations, and are soon swept toward a vista of synthesized chords. In bonding better to this voltage vision, the music gives full play to our fancy, and rises to new heights. There is a creative lifeblood circulating through Hyperincandescent. It is a music-to-think-about record - easier to enjoy when your mind is flexible and in a playful, pondering mood. In this open, neural neutral state we are most likely to find an order to these tones, and some meaning waiting for us within this most patient music.

WXPN/STAR'S END Winter 2022 Fundraiser
Star's End Chuck van Zyl Star's End T-Shirt

Every weekend from 1-6AM Saturday night/Sunday morning will find me at WXPN's broadcast studio in West Philadelphia presenting Star's End, - spinning a wealth of Ambient, Ethereal, Innovative Spacemusic out over the airwaves. My playlists attempt to be as diverse as possible, while keeping within the spacey format - and includes music from all over the world, by different generations, from a range of genres, cultures and backgrounds.

With each on-air outing I am pursuing the ideal of producing something larger than the sum of its parts - where all the individual tracks take on greater meaning and effect when mixed together into the five-hour, flowing soundscape of Star's End.

Airing continuously in its time slot on WXPN since 1976 Star's End has been offering a unique and consistent presentation of music for nearly 50 years. The most important person in this endeavor has always been the listener. For you Star's End is a refuge, a space for personal devotion. It's also a place that welcomes an ever-growing worldwide community of emerging musicians - heard right alongside the venerable standards and classics from the earliest days.

In Winter 2022 listeners to Public Radio Station WXPN were again asked to pledge their financial support to Star's End. Public Radio exists through funding from its listeners, and periodic on-air fundraisers are the most sensible method to meet fiscal goals.

Giving to Public Radio continues to be a meaningful gesture. During the broadcast of 20 February 2022 Star's End spent the entire night in a fundraising effort, and was counting on your help. Thanks for staying up, tuning in and calling in, or going online to make your donation.

Sincere Thanks to everyone who did their part!

Chuck van Zyl: Live on Star's End 08.26.18 - Special WXPN Thank You Gift
Live on Star's End 08.26.18 Produced by Public Radio Station WXPN, Chuck van Zyl: Live on Star's End 08.26.18 (63'36") is not a commercial release. It is available only as a "Thank-You" gift to those making a donation to WXPN/STAR'S END.

This album is a conventional silver CD featuring over 60 minutes of the Chuck van Zyl live electronic realizations made in the WXPN performance studio during a private Salon Concert (for Tony Masiello) and live-to-air broadcast of 25/26 August 2018. Its four parts each offer passages of improvised in-the-moment sequencer manipulations, amidst the ethereal yearning of synthesized harmonies and cresting lead lines. The listener is invited inside, to float away as the patterns and textures envelope them - tumbling in circles, spirals and pinwheels, beneath unfurling ribbons of creamy synth melodies and modulated, chirping effects.

Chuck van Zyl: Live on Star's End 08.26.18 may seem more like a spiritual expression than an exploration of a musical form. This work has mysterious power purely on a sonic level. But the miracle of this release is that every time we listen to it, our minds will hear something new - and will so find a different album. Absorbing the full tapestry of the Electronic/Berlin-School experience, and the ideals of live improvisation, we can easily imagine every concert outing serving as a mystic portal for this musician's own spiritual journey.

Whether channeled from the astral plane, or just the transformation of electricity into sound, Live on Star's End 08.26.18 is for those seeking a deeper examination of tone and mood. Anyone in love with Spacemusic and its very specific poetry will want to own this recording. While this musical form may have been established in the 1970s, Live on Star's End 08.26.18 feels made-today fresh. A ceaselessly inventive work, its history begins now.
