STAR'S END Update - 1 March 2026
|
In everyday life we are continually tasked with imagining our way into the brain of the people we encounter. Throughout the realm of Ambient Music this responsibility is much easier to fulfill, as it seems that the mind of the composer is so easily available and hovering in the very air around us. The anthology The Sound of Dreams (67:20) offers 13 aural encounters with an intriguing variety of innovative human intelligences. Collected under the purview of Australia's Inspired by Breathing label the arrangement, energy and direction of each entry varies delightfully across many moods, styles and designs. What unifies this compilation is the unclaimed region from which this group draws their inspiration. While the domain of the dreamer is indeed a location where we all speak the same language, the compositions on this album mean to find their full effect in that rare mental state in-between wakefulness and sleep. This pre-dream condition is common to the human experience, but seldom appreciated by the slumbersome. We often miss the opportunity to discover new truths by spending too little time in this bewildering zone of partial consciousness. Charging the hidden activity of thought with a forward motion each contributor found on The Sound of Dreams provides a surreal drift across a dreamy and distinctive terrain. Where a coiled surge nests inside the long lines of unwinding percussion passages, further in we feel the slow light and heat of the creative current. Playing out in our heads the pleasure of discovery winds down into slow motion shifts of textural contrasts and foggy atmospheres. Betwixt and between the tone poems, electronics, beats and grooves, somewhere in the art and craft of the music we encounter the human signal - including that of: M G Barnes, Henry Bath, Call the Doctor, clint.E, Darraday, Benn DeMole, Billy Elly, FΞIJOΛ, Miles Lee, Margee, Misolt, Bohdan Stupak and Trem 77. Proclaiming that the power of this music is greater than that of the individual maker The Sound of Dreams is the rare find that combines such disparate works and personalities into something truly greater than the sum of its parts.
Please tune in to the 03.01.26 broadcast of STAR'S END for a track from The Sound of Dreams, the new anthology from the Inspired by Breathing label... and much more...

| WXPN/STAR'S END - Winter 2026 Member Drive Thanks!
|
With each succeeding broadcast Star's End releases extraordinary new energies over the airwaves. Marking its 50th Anniversary at WXPN in Philadelphia, the five decade drift of imagination, its passionate exploration of innovative music and vivid manipulation of time and space have elevated this radio program to a great height.
Every weekend from 1:00am to 6:00am Saturday Nights/Sunday Mornings Star's End works to renew the potential of Public Radio. As we are carried through new regions of music and thought each radio-lit evening provides the audience with an aural experience meant to expand horizons and enrich the human spirit. From the bright and teeming to the dark then probing, the unique mix of musical realizations ascends along enlivening lines of beauty.
Across its 50 year run Star's End has preserved a space for us to center and contemplate. Even in the midst of tremendous distractions, we listen past all the noise - to simply spend some time with ones' own self.
Thank You for showing that you support this broadcasting endeavor, and validating the extraordinary 50 year run of Star's End on WXPN. In Winter 2026 the understanding few again played their part in the Public Radio enterprise - considering what this remarkable venture is worth, and then coming through with a donation to help it continue.
Giving to Public Radio continues to be a significant gesture. During the broadcast of 22 February 2026 host Chuck van Zyl spent the entire night live on-air in a fundraising effort. To you listeners who stayed up, tuned in, and made a donation, please know that your generosity is truly meaningful and appreciated! Thank You!
Please Note: The 02.22.26 broadcast of Star's End offered Special Thank You Gifts, including the Star's End Coffee Mug & Keychain plus an invitation to The Electrical Spectacle (the WXPN/Star's End 2026 Member Event: 25 April 2026). Please Click Here for more info. Thanks!
